Ride or Race?

“Are you on a ride or in a race? On a ride you enjoy the experience. In a race you’re trying to win. Which approach you choose makes a big difference.”

On this week’s blog we will be featuring some of my favorite photos from this excellent trip to Italy. This one is the river in Trento with a ubiquitous church.

Iowa

Ethanol mandates and subsidies exist because, for thirty years, Iowa has been the first state in the quadrennial US presidential primary season. They have leveraged that position into wealth for Iowans and expenses for others using ethanol as the transfer agent. President Biden is to be commended for his attempt to move Iowa out of its first mover primary spot.

Look here if you want a refresher on why ethanol mandates and subsidies are a terrible thing for the working class and the poor. This rant was brought on by a discussion of why gas prices are over $5.00 a gallon in Arizona and over $7.00 in California. Ethanol is part of the problem.

Global Warming Good

Otzi the Iceman was discovered in 1991by some hikers in the high Alps near the border of Austria and Italy. He had been frozen in a glacier for 5000 years. It appears that he was murdered. From his mummified remains an amazing amount has been learned about life in the copper age. Otzi became an international superstar. The museum was crowded so I bought the book. The mummy is on display and the photo above is a recreation made by scientists and artist of what he might have looked like. Lean more.

Words Seldom Seen: Bast

Bast

Noun: Strong, woody fibers, such as flax, hemp or jute, obtained from inner bark and used historically in the manufacture of woven goods and cordage.

Example: Otzi used bast to tie his leather garments together.

Pronunciation Guide: Bast like Cast. soft b, hard a.

This word is from the Otzi Museum in Bolzano, Italy. Otzi used bast as we use thread or laces to hold things together. We visited the museum on or Italy trip with OAT.

Don’t worry I’ll be making a few more posts about Otzi the 5000 year old iceman. Or you can click on the Museum link above. I bought the book and the postcard at the excellent museum store.
