WWIT about the US 2024 Election

WWIT (What Was I Thinking) about the Trump vs Biden rematch for President of the United States? People tend to be herd animals and they adapt their opinions to match those around them. Currently I predict that Biden will win but it will be close. The photo is of another great Arizona sunset. This post was created using my iPad. I usually use my MacBook but if I can make my iPad work for my blog it will make my summer travels much easier. Let… Read More »WWIT about the US 2024 Election

WWIT About: “Asylum Seekers”

WWIT is an Acronym for “What Was I Thinking.” “Asylum Seekers” are the new hole in the generally protectionist armor of our immigration policy. Judges have said and the administration has implemented a policy of “all asylum seekers will get a fair hearing.”  Which means they get to stay in the USA until they get the hearing. I favor the policy, they could have done the implementation better. The number of asylum seekers is growing rapidly although the total is still small (120,000 this year).… Read More »WWIT About: “Asylum Seekers”

WWIT about Student Debt

Borrowing is generally a bad idea. The Federal Student Loan Program is a perfect example of unintended consequences. Loaning students a bit of money so they can get an education sounds like an excellent idea. Unfortunately it has had some seriously bad consequences. Not the least of which is raising the price of education. It also has lured many students into borrowing money for education that they will never be able to pay back. It has corrupted educational institutions (especially for profits) to distort the… Read More »WWIT about Student Debt

What Was I Thinking About Abortion

A search of my blog site shows that I have never bothered to make a post about abortion directly. But I have addressed it obliquely and after the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs Wade i wanted to put in writing where I stand and memorialize my forecast. I support women’s right to have an abortion until she is carrying a viable child. I think that then the child starts to gain some rights. When exactly that is is for the society to decide via the… Read More »What Was I Thinking About Abortion

WWIT About Transgender Issues

WWIT: What Was I Thinking About Transgender Athletes In our diverse and tolerant society we should be willing to accept that for some people sex is not a binary thing. We can accommodate and celebrate them with very little difficulty. But there is one exception: Because people born with a Y Chromosome* tend to be larger, stronger and have higher levels of testosterone. It seems to me that is unfair in athletics for people with a Y chromosome to compete against people who have two… Read More »WWIT About Transgender Issues

WWIT about Ukraine

Four or five days ago Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine without provocation. He is running into more resistance than he expected and the financial and military worlds are in turmoil.Even I am looking at more news and have suggested some solutions. (see below) But I’m stopping to remind myself of the fuss about Quemoy and Matsu in the late 1960’s. (look it up) This doesn’t appear to me to be the rise of a new Nazi threat. It appears a bit more like Putin attempting to… Read More »WWIT about Ukraine

WWIT about Covid update

On September 8 the President gave a talk announcing that he was going to use OSHA to enforce a mandatory vaccination program.  Some said it was an attempt to divert attention from the Afghanistan disaster, some said he wanted to increase the vaccination rate and this was a tool he had in his tool box to make it happen. Both can be true.  Personally I am vaccinated as are all those around me and I feel pretty safe. People who are not vaccinated are in… Read More »WWIT about Covid update

WWIT Afghanistan

President Biden ended the war in Afghanistan by letting the Taliban win. Over the next few years we’ll see the consequences. If our mission was to keep it from being used as a base for terrorism then it was working. If the mission was to make it into a modern democracy we failed. The withdrawal was a mess as those things always are. The mess was exacerbated by some boneheaded decisions by military and civilian leaders. Often times the choices confronting you are all bad… Read More »WWIT Afghanistan

WWIT About Impeachment

Donald Trump is not a Republican, he is a con man. If I were a Senator I would vote to impeach former President Trump. If I was a Democrat Senator I would vote to impeach because what Trump did is unforgivable and it is a good move politically. If I were a Republican Senator I would vote to impeach because what Trump did is unforgivable and it is a good move politically in the long run. The peaceful transfer of power is so important that… Read More »WWIT About Impeachment
