A Clearer Pond

Finally I have some evidence that the UV Filter is working: You can see the fish. Click here to see the pre-UV filter pictures posted last month. I’m considering a second UV Filter for perfect clarity. Spring 2008 fish report: The pink 2 inch algae eaters have reappeared. There are still no mosquito fish. They must have died in the winter. Lillian bought me a new Plecostomus and it has vanished to the depths The Koi had some babies but they are not pretty colors… Read More »A Clearer Pond

The Pond April 2008

I have been mostly silent about the pond in 2008 because it has been murky and I have been embarrassed. It started last fall when we were in Santa Fe it went green with a tiny algae and I was not able to restore the balance all winter. I even took all of the rocks out of the stream and rinsed them. Finally I went down last weekend and bought a UV Filter from Steve at PTF (Pasadena Tropical Fish) and within a day the… Read More »The Pond April 2008

Backyard Birds 2

A flock of small yellow birds on the tree in the front yard. A bad photo of a hawk who came to the stream to drink. I had to take the photo through the window with the digital zoom.

He’s Back 2

The Great Blue Heron is back and was seen lurking around the pond. He flew off before I got his picture yesterday but I have a new remote for my camera so I hope to get the best photos yet. We can buy new fish if necessary.  He has now visited for three years. A photo from the 2007 visit.

Pond Improvement

The teak bench that used to live by the back door moved some time ago to the lawn by the pond. Lillian had suggested that I should build an alcove for it behind the pond. I’d never gotten to it done partly because I was skeptical about how it would look. As you can see it looks great. And the view from the bench is excellent. From the bench you can see all of the falls in the stream and even better hear them. Thanks… Read More »Pond Improvement

He’s Back

The Stork is back at the pond: Nurit saw him on Tuesday and I got this picture. He has scared the fish and tipped over the plants but most of the fish seem to have survived.  He is officially a Great Blue Heron but is commonly called a Stork or a Crane He was in the yard while we were having an important meeting about the “Right to Migrate” documentary. A visit from a Stork is a very auspicious event and bodes well for the… Read More »He’s Back

Yosemite Web Cam

This link will take you to the Sentinel Dome Web Cam. It is a live camera on Sentinel Dome showing a shot of down to Half Dome. You can see a High Sierra sunrise every day. It is what I want to do with the Pond Cam. All I am lacking now are the technical competence, the equipment and the time. Yosemite is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places in the world. The stories about it being overcrowded are just stories. Most… Read More »Yosemite Web Cam

A New Turtle in the Pond

Lillian gave me this very nice turtle in his own special case for Hanukkah. The wrapping had holes in it and I had a momentary scare that she had given me something alive. It turned out to be this low maintenance painted tin turtle. Here he is at his new station guarding the pond against intruders.

A Hawk at the Pond

There has been a mystery at the pond for the last few weeks. The Mosquito Fish have been vanishing. In fact they are all gone. There used to be hundreds swimming near the surface.  Yesterday I shot this photo of a new visitor. A Hawk at the Pond Now I watch CSI occasionally so I know that we have to finish the investigation before we draw any conclusions. But I also shot a video of the hawk fishing and you can see it on YouTube… Read More »A Hawk at the Pond

Pond Visitor

A Great Egret visited the pond today. I took pictures and then scared him away. Click the picture or click here to see all of the great Great Egret pictures on Flickr. Missy the dog wasn’t getting too close to this three foot high bird.
