Henges

The Third Hengish Thing

This is the third day in a row that I’ve posted a hengish thing. This photo of a magnificent stone pile from Crissy Field in San Francisco was taken by Richard Drake.  It was sent to me by his brother and my friend Bill Drake of South Carolina. It reminds me of the stone piles in Hawaii,  Maine and Southern California that I have, for no apparent reason, memorialized before.

Henge Failure

Here is a Henge that didn’t work. The proportion is wrong and the lintel doesn’t look right. I think it could be better with hot melt glue but it seems heretical to destroy books for whimsical art.   Even books that are entirely homeless with no prospect of ever being adopted, let alone read. We will have to go back to the books on this one.

A Mysterious Ancient Henge

In the UCLA Clark Library the Head Librarian, Nina Schneider had opened some of the books that had maps and displayed them for the Map Society to take a look at.  One of the books was open to a picture that looked like a henge. Mystery Henge But not Stonehenge.  The book from the 17th century was, I think,  a gazetteer of English Counties in Latin.  The illustration is in the Oxfordshire chapter and Stonehenge is in Salisbury. I promise to go back down to… Read More »A Mysterious Ancient Henge

Recognition for Tube Henge

Tube henge and the Awful Tower got a nice write up on Clonehenge.com.  Take a look and be sure to give it five stars.  I’m trying for henger of the year.

Toilet Paper Tube Henge 2010

It was an an amazing event. Twenty people gathered to see the worlds first ever henge made out of toilet paper tubes.  Kimberly Clark’s announcement that the toilet paper tube was an endangered species inspired this tribute. A poem about the end of the Tube written by Rachel B was read by Katie W.  Video to follow on YouTube when I can figure it out. And because there were extra tubes we spontaneously built the awful tower. Special thanks to Randy, Joe and Johnny for… Read More »Toilet Paper Tube Henge 2010

Henge Event Preview

At the Winter Solstice at exactly sunset the bathroom light shines directly down the avenue of tubes and onto the wad-o-paper. Tomorrow.  It should be a magical moment.  Rain or Shine.

TP Tube Memorial Henge Trial

Since Kimberly Clark announced last week that they were going tubeless we have been preparing to build TP Tube Memorial Henge.  Over the weekend we performed this important test of the hengeability of toilet paper rolls.  It looks great.  The full henge will be installed on December 19.  The nearest Sunday to the winter solistice.  If all goes well and the TP astronomer has calculated correctly the late afternoon sun will shine through main arch and illuminate the toilet paper wad on the throne.  Please… Read More »TP Tube Memorial Henge Trial

Bellflower Public Art

Michael S. and I went down to Bellflower and Santa Fe Springs on Sunday morning to look at some public art.  Michael is an expert on the public art in LA and an excellent adventure companion.  It was sunny in Pasadena so I extrapolated twenty miles to sunny in Bellflower but was wrong.  Even with the overcast the “Invitation/Decalogue” in Bellflower was pretty impressive. It is not clear what the circle of golden fiberglass tusks are supposed to represent but they looked cool and kind… Read More »Bellflower Public Art
