Mass Descension

A diving inverse of the mass ascension at the balloon fiesta.

Balloons

“mass descention”

Get a lot of divers to all go down to about 40 feet together in a confined area and shoot a lot of video. Get it in the Guiness Book of World Records

It would be a good thing for the dive operators in Southern California to organize. Lots of publicity and air sales on the day of the mass descention. Lots of fun at the dive party that evening.

Gene’s Dive Resort

Last week I spent three days at Gene’s Dive Resort.

Gene's Dive Resort

the Resort

It is “All Inclusive” so I gained a few pounds and had a wonderful time. We dove two days for fossilized sharks teeth and actually found some.

teeth I found

They can’t call me the “toothless old bastard” any more. Bill E. of Megateeth.com was a great guide and even though a few things went wrong we survived and had a real peak experience. The dive boat was run by another Gene who was a great help and was able to get me out of the water every time I screwed up.
We didn’t take any underwater pictures because the visibility is about zero without a light and less than a foot with one.

The tide is flowing at about 3 knots so you have to wear a lot of extra weights just to stay in place on the bottom.

Diving for Sharks Teeth

While in Richmond Hill visiting Gene and Carole B we went diving in the tidal river near Gene’s house for fossilized sharks teeth. Visibility was about 6 inches with a light on but it was great fun. It really is a treasure hunt.

Ray and I ready to go

Bill E. who is the expert finds so many that he sells them on the internet. You can see his site at Megateeth.com.

On this trip Bill found about 15 teeth, one of which was about 6 inches, Gene found one and Ray P found two. I didn’t find any but I did find plenty of fossiized bones and what is purported to be the ear bone of a whale.

Motmot

On the last day of any dive trip we have to take an excursion because we can’t fly within 24 hours of diving. This year we took a very long van trip to Chichen Itza to see the temple which was interesting but even better was the rare Motmot bird we saw while at Chichen Itza.

Cozumel Diving

I`m spending this week diving with the Codger Divers in Cozumel. The Hotel Iberostar is excellent but the internet connections are not good, so I`m not able to read email. It is a big system shock. The diving is very good. We have been going out with Dive with Martin and seeing excellent stuff every day. Nobody has drowned and Joel got certified.

Life is good.

Free Postcards 2

This free postcard was sent to me by Andy B.  Andy is one of the world’s greatest warm water divers.  Because of Global Warming he has just started diving in Puget Sound.  What a great man turning a problem into an opportunity.

Codger Divers go to Bonaire

These are a selection of my land pictures. Some underwater shots will be added if any of the highly skilled underwater photographers in the group ever send them to me to post.
The group

This was the group that went to Bonaire in February and March of 2006. As you can see we had a very good time and also did some diving.

P2260037.JPG We happened to be in Bonaire for Carnival and stood outside of the Mona Lisa Bar for a while and observed the customs of the locals. Some of the Codgers were more into it than others.

P2270041.JPG Two cruise ships came in during the week and moored near the hotel. These things are big. More than 2,000 people visiting an island with about 12,000 residents.

P2270050.JPGMike visiting the open air fruit and vegetable market. It is a beautiful building but the produce was lousy.

Sunsets from the hotel bar were often spectacular. Tom, Howard, Frank, Andy and kind diver from another group who took a picture for us that didn’t turn out that well. “What a great country: you order one beer and they give you two.”

P3020077.JPGSimon with Pepe one of our two dive masters for the week. Laurel was the other one. Pepe was from Venezuela and competes at motocross. The dive facilities were excellent and very well run. All of the dive sites we went to were within a 15 minute boat ride and the ocean on the leeward side were the diving was very calm.

Howard, Gene, Mike (the driver) and Simon rented a car and toured the island which is pretty much overrun by donkeys and goats. Mike is examining the odd constructions above the town of Rincon and of course looking for birds.

More photos later after I solve some technical problems.

Roatan 2003

We went to Roatan in July of 2003. Unfortunately I had to leave early to finish selling my business. Frank took some underwater pictures but I can’t open the disc to post them on the web site. We stayed at the Coco View Resort on the south side of the island. The place is on it’s own little island and is far from any town which was kind of a negative. They had great shore diving and the dive boat crews were excellent. One of the nice features was that you were assigned a locker near the boats to store all of your equipment, in the morning the crew loaded your stuff on the boat and got it all set up. The diving and organization were excellent but the food was terrible. A few of the guys who stayed all week got sick.
