Pancakes in San Diego

On Sunday morning Lillian took Paula B and I went to Richard Walkers, a very good pancake place, in downtown San Diego.  It is very popular.  This photo shows the line outside:

Washing Machine Cows

P2260004.JPG

These excellent “Washing Machine Cows” were created by Aldo Santini and are on display at outside the Giorgio Santini Art Gallery (tel 011 52 661 614 1459). They are located south of Rosarito Beach in Baja California. It is an easy 45 minute drive from the border south to the art gallery. Get off the toll road at Rosarito and drive south another 15 minutes. The gallery has some excellent art and the “cows” are a site to behold. You can own a “cow” for not a lot of money and you get a threefer: Art, recycling and promoting art in Mexico.

Amazing Grace

AGM_bannerA_300x250.jpg

Nurit and I saw Amazing Grace on Friday night. I was very moved by the story because of my work for the right to migrate. The struggle against slavery was fought initially by a few Quakers. William Wilberforce, the star of this movie, was one of the first politicians to take up the cause.

This is what Nurit called a “talking movie”. Its subject is thought provoking, the characters and acting are captivating and it is absolutely worth seeing.

The Rabbi’s Cat

“It’s worth shutting your mouth to be happy.”

From The Rabbi’s Cat by Joann Sfar.

This is the first “graphic novel” I have ever read.  It has an entertaining story that pulls you along and the illustrations are very well done and add to the story.  The cat is not drawn to be beautiful or even very cat-like but that might be intentional.

Offensive Humor

What do you get when you cross a Jehovah’s Witness with a Unitarian?

Somebody who goes from door-to-door for no reason.

I found this joke in P. J. O’Rourke’s new book On The Wealth of Nation. It is an excellent synopsis and interpretation of Adam Smith’s Tome.  O’Rourke writes in a humorously expository style that makes even the dense writing of someone like Smith understandable and relevant.

Bucket Sculpture

Peters01+.jpg

Many years ago I worked in the bucket industry.  I loved buckets so when I came across this bucket sculpture I was jealous, nostalgic and awed.

Plastic Buckets as art.  What a wonderful world.
