The Founders: Samuel Chase

“The jury has the right to determine both the law and the facts.”

Samuel Chase

Samuel Chase was a signer of the declaration of Independence from Maryland. He also has the distinction of being the only member of the Supreme Court ever impeached. He was acquitted by the Senate and served to his death in 1809. He was appointed to the court by George Washington after serving as a state court judge. His impeachment and subsequent acquittal were a result of President Thomas Jefferson’s attempt to quell the power of the Federalists.
