The Founders: Carter Braxton

Virtue is the principle of a republic, therefore a republic is the best form of government.

Carter Braxton was another of the wealthy Virginia planters who owned large plantations and slaves and signed the declaration of Independence . He is different than most in two ways that I could find first he wrote and published a “tract” titled Securing the Republic from which the above quote is taken. And he was a moderate urging a go slow attitude about independence he signed the Declaration only to conform with the remainder of the Virginia delegation. He hoped for a reconciliation with England that gave the colonies the same rights as Scots.
