The Founders: William Floyd

“The Bible has done more harm than any other book in the world.”

William Floyd

William Floyd was born into a wealthy farming family on Long Island NY in 1732 and became active in revolutionary politics. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New York and signed the Declaration of Independence in July 1776. A few weeks later his property was confiscated by the British Army during their attack on New York. He served in the New York State Militia and rose to the rank if Brigadier General. He settled in Oneida County NY where the town of Floyd is named after him. He remained active in politics and was one of New York’s first congressmen after the ratification of the Constitution. He is definitely one of the forgotten fifty. Floyd, New York has a population of 3782.

The quote attributed to Floyd is the only one I found and it doesn’t really seem to match whatever else we know about him.
