The Founders: Samuel Huntington

“It is not to be expected from human nature, that we should all have the same opinion.”

Samuel Huntington

A signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation Samuel Huntington was another self educated lawyer who joined the cause of independence from England early and was willing to risk treason to help the cause. He was governor of Connecticut in 1789 when the Constitution was up for ratification he made an impassioned speech in favor of ratification from which the above line is quoted.

Each one of these men was ordinary and exceptional. I’m sure that there were equally courageous people on the loyalist side but they lost and their voices have been lost to history. The stories of the forgotten fifty signers have been mostly lost to history because they were with the exception of the signing quite ordinary. With the act of signing they became some of the most significant people in history.
