The Founders: George Ross

George Ross

“Agriculture, manufactures, commerce and navigation, the four pillars of our prosperity, are most thriving when left most free to individual enterprise.”

Thomas Jefferson

Ross was the last of the Pennsylvania delegation to affix his signature to the Declaration of Independence. He was not present for the vote arriving a few days later and signing on July 20, 1776.

He was the uncle (by marriage) of Betsy Ross and is famously recorded as the person who accompanied George Washington to her upholstery shop to commission the first American flag

Ross gave his station and health to the Revolution, retiring from Congress due to illness in 1777 and dying later that year at age 49. Even Chat GPT says there are no quotes from him worth recording. He really is one of the many who were swept up in the moment and lent their pens to the cause to create the critical mass that a movement needs.
