George Read
George Read was a reluctant rebel. He voted against the Declaration of Independence but his vote was annulled by Rodney’s heroic ride to give Delaware a two to one vote in favor. Read eventually reluctantly signed.
His main concern was preserving some power for the small states. He was a proponent of the bicameral legislature with a senate appointed by the legislatures of the various states, giving each state equal representation. Once the rights were assured, he led the ratification movement in Delaware, which, partly as a result of his efforts, became the first state to ratify and did so unanimously.
Read died at age 65 of heart issues and is buried in the Episcopal Church grave yard in New Castle, Delaware.
