The Founders: John Witherspoon

“In my judgment, sir, we are not only ripe for a Declaration of Independence, but rotting for lack of one.”

John Witherspoon

John Witherspoon was born in Scotland in 1723 and became a well known clergyman. He was the only active clergyman and the only college president to sign the Declaration. In 1768 he was recruited by Richard Stockton to emigrate to New Jersey and become president of The College of New Jersey that later became Princeton University. There are books about John Witherspoon and many buildings at Princeton are named after him. Here is the link to Witherspoon on Wikipedia if you want to do a deep dive.
