Words Seldom Seen: Perigee

Perigee

Noun: the point in the orbit of a moon or a satellite at which it is nearest to the object it is orbiting.

Example: “At its perigee the moon is roughly 224,000 miles from earth.”

Unlike its opposite, apogee, perigee has not evolved to apply to anything other than orbits of objects in space. No one would say: “At times during the difficult climb out of the canyon I was at my perigee.” They might say: “I was at my apogee after finishing the climb.”

Photo is of the Oregon coast near Tillamook.
