I’m sorry to have to say this but this is not McCullough’s best book. It has interesting moments and excellently researched details but it’s scope is limited, it’s character development is poor and the treatment of the Native Americans is even poorer. Read a Path Between the Seas to appreciate McCullough at his best.Five on my extremely critical one to ten scale
