Ideas

The UnLego

Lego is amazing! The parts fit together with incredible precision. Not like real life where the parts don’t fit and everything is a compromise. In real life perfection is not possible. And this is how a new idea starts. Introducing Un-Lego. Model building the way life really is. And it gets better Un-Lego are made in some of the poorest villages in the world. They are not made by machines of even higher precision than the Lego bricks. The packaging is locally sourced and all… Read More »The UnLego

AI App

We need an AI App that sorts, tags, filters, crops and retouches digital photos exactly like you would have done it. The app can ask you to help it make decisions for a while. BTW I have nearly 150,000 digital photos in the cloud. Where eve that is. The photo is a screen shot of my Photos app from February.

Moon Theory

The setting moon seen from the “Senior Summit” of Piestewa Peak. But this is not just the setting moon. This one is the “Wolf Moon.” When we saw this moon were speculating about why we are paying more attention to the lunar cycle in recent years. How did the idea of giving specific names to moons become much more popular recently. I have an idea why it might be. In cities for the last hundred years or so burning fossil fuels have made smog and… Read More »Moon Theory

DEI vs MEA

Diversity, Equity and InclusionvsMerit, Experience and Attitude. If you needed to choose a doctor and you had data, would your criteria be more DEI or more MEA? How about when you were choosing a lawyer, a restaurant manager or a football coach? I rest my case. It is not popular to say but in our personal decision making we are mostly MEA. In the long run only natural monopolies can hire based on DEI and survive in the marketplace.

Fine, Just Fine

“What could we have done better tonight?” This is what a restaurant manager should be asking instead of the usual “How is your food? A small change might elicit some useful information and some goodwill. “How is your food tasting?” usually doesn’t do that. Photo is of one of the postcards I send that is most often liked in Postcrossing.

Super Parade Opportunity

Most holidays have parades.  People like parades.  They like to be in parades.  But Superbowl Sunday doesn’t have a parade even though it is close to being our countries biggest holiday.  This oversight seems like a big opportunity for a sunbelt city like San Diego, Albuquerque, El Paso or Tucson. How would it work.  Bands, Floats and Sponsors followed by a chance for all the participants to watch the game on the Jumbotron in the local enclosed stadium.  I imagine a Rose Parade type event… Read More »Super Parade Opportunity

Reassuringly Expensive

Reassuringly Expensive Luxury Goods need to be Reassuringly Expensive. Think about it. Is it the opposite of Bargain Hunting? Photo is Zelensky searching for weapons in Napa.

A Free Society

The Great Firewall of China The Great Firewall of China is a national effort to censor internet content from those within the country’s borders. It is an indicator of Chinese citizens lack of freedom of speech that their access to sites like Wikipedia and the Wall Street Journal is blocked. The Great Wall didn’t work for long and the Great Firewall will have an even shorter life. I do like the way the name explains concisely what it is. BTW Firewall is a Portmanteau.

Another Problem

Sir, We have a problem. “Can it be solved” “No sir” “Then we don’t have a problem, we have a condition. Manage it or adjust to it.” This is the corollary to the problem that can be solved with money that I published a few months ago and credited to Brock Siegel. Another of the beautiful Bonsai on display at the Huntington Gardens.

Idea Filter

“Some ideas are so stupid only intellectuals believe them.” Thomas Sowell An idea that probably fits this definition is that we can stop the spread of “invasive species.” The photo shows the sign showing the area near Chicago where they have electrified the Industrial Canal in an attempt to keep the Asian Carp from reaching the Great Lakes. It will fail but only after a lot of money has been spent.
