Historically tea was an English drink. Thirty years ago in the USA there were only three types of tea available. Lipton and Tetley were the standard brands and Twinings was the upscale one.
Since then tea has gone herbal, organic, holistic and main stream. The number of brands has proliferated and the shelf space dedicated to tea in food stores has grown dramatically.
Meanwhile the market share of Twinings, an English company, has languished. I don’t know why. In an explosively growing market one of the early leaders has apparently missed all of the growth. What went wrong? Maybe they grew in another area? A brilliant business writer should investige this and write a popular book. It could have a name that is a play on the Boston Tea Party.
