Safed in Israel, like Santa Fe,

NM, has turned its

remote beauty and

implied spirituality

into a hundred

gift shops.

    From David B:
My favorite memory of Safed is of the time I was with a Federation mission and the bus dropped us off at one end of town, and we had a couple of hours to stroll to the other end where we would be picked up. Of course, it was at the “gift shop.” Inside the shop, I discovered a very long shofar. It was priced at $120.00 (note, not sheckles). I did a quiet test toot and was amazed at the sound, so I decided to purchase it. When I got to the checkout counter, the clerk, a 30ish man, was finishing up with the previous customer, so I placed the shofar and a 100 dollar bill on the counter. When my turn arrived, without skipping a beat, the clerk scooped up the 100 dollar bill, reached under the counter and grabbed some bubble wrap, wrapped the shofar and handed it to me. Never once was any word said – by him or by me.

The other memory I have was when Paula and I were there and walking on our own. I am in the necessary habit of watching the ground for foot placement when I am in unfamiliar places, and where we were had unpaved alleys. As we turned a corner, I proceeded to walk right into a fire extinguisher which was attached to the wall with the bottom of it at my forehead height. I must have looked like a cartoon character with my legs still walking as my head bonked the extinguisher and I went flat onto my back. I am sure that there is a moral to this story, but I don’t know what it is.
