While we were in England I took pictures of signs that were unfamiliar or unusual to us as Californians.
“Rising Bollards” is a good example. We have some bollards in California and some of them are removable but I have never seen a rising bollard. And the name “Bollard” is not yet in general use. It will be however. In this time of increased insecurity bollard installations are also increasing.
In England the word for “counterclockwise” is “anticlockwise.” I believe that it is much deeper than just word usage. The English it seems have changed sides in the digital revolution and are opposing all things analog. This sign came from a Priory near Hadrian’s Wall. It had a few other indications of how rural it was. Like this one:
One of my favorites was:
“Weak bridge at Wark” Alliteration in road signs is rare.
And finally a sign of how the world is changing:
Thai food two nights a week at a traditional looking pub in Cambridge.
