Coastal Products

Back in the mid 1970’s in one of my first business ventures I and three other guys tried to make and sell plastic sharks teeth.  Jaws fever was sweeping the nation and we thought we could capitalize.  We started Coastal Products to make “Genuine Plastic Sharks Teeth.”

The product was finally made but by then the fad was fading and of the thousands we made only a few hundred were sold.  What I learned from this misadventure was not to chase fads or start companies when stoned and never to enter a market when you don’t have distribution.  I saved a box of teeth 30 years for nostalgia purposes.  Last month when I went Megaladon tooth diving with Bill E. of Megateeth I told him about the Jaws teeth enterprise and when I got home I sent him two of them still in there original packaging.  He suspects that there is a nostalgia market for the teeth and has posted one of them for sale on ebay.  You can see it for sale here.  I have sent Bill the remaining teeth.  Thank you Bill.

It is a wonderful surprise to see our failed plastic product in the same picture as real megaladon teeth.  Now I have to contact John M. and Greg L. two of my partners in Coastal Products.  I have already spoken to Wally G.  Coastal Products was a great failed enterprise.  Without it I may not have learned enough to start the business’s I did start.  I have always liked the epithat: “He learned from his mistakes and he learned a lot.”
