Migration is the oldest action against poverty.
It selects those who most want help. It is good for the country to which they go; it helps break the equilibrium of poverty in the country from which they come.

You ask a very good question. The answer is complex and includes economic competition, fear of cultural change, perception of unfairness, selfishness ( I got mine you get yours) and recently political messaging and media influence, particularly Fox News, and the current administration.
