I don’t think this is true. Hundreds of thousands of people work multiple jobs and still aren’t able to make ends meet.
Three thoughts:
Yes it is an oversimplification
The fact that “hundreds of thousands” of people are alive means they are in fact making ends meet. Unfortunately life is hard for many but it is easier here than elsewhere.
I should have explained: The book the quote is from is comparing being poor in America to the places immigrants come from.
