The Founders: Richard Stockton

“The public is generally unthankful, and I never will become a Servant of it, till I am convinced that by neglecting my own affairs I am doing more acceptable Service to God and Man.”

Richard Stockton

Richard Stockton was born in 1730 in New Jersey. He studied law and became one of the leading lawyers in the state. Stockton was the first person from New Jersey to sign the Declaration of Independence. He was important in getting Princeton University started. His loyalty was questioned by both the British who captured him at least once and by the rebels who knew he had signed a loyalty oath to be paroled. He died of throat cancer in 1781. He did leave us at least one quote (see above). Read a lot more of his story on Wikipedia.
