Arbitrary Stupid Goal by Tamara Shopsin inspired my new goal which is to visit the oldest operating tavern in every state and have a beer.
Some people try to visit every National Park, others try to visit every State Capitol. I think some of my friends are trying to visit every Costco. There is a book about trying to climb to the highest point in every State and my friend Larry Berle wrote A Golfers Dream about trying to play the top 100 golf courses in America.
So far we have visited claimants to the title of oldest tavern in five states. I’m using the terms claimants and oldest because founding and continuity are disputable claims. But that just makes it more fun. We are heading out on a long road trip in a week and hope to add another five to our list by the end of summer.
We went to Fraunces Tavern in NYC last month and drank a very delicious beer at the bar pictured above. The people were young and friendly but the bar was old, as am I. George Washington was here. An auspicious start to our arbitrary stupid goal.
