Shaping Your Mind

“Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in it.”

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

From The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman

If you sit a lot your spine will take the shape of a sitting person. If you wear tight shoes your feet will appear to be smaller. And if you hold a lot of negative thoughts you will become a negative person.

  1. “Your mind will take the shape of what you frequently hold in it.” That’s very true. When we are so negative about everything, even when there is happy thing happening to us, we are already so used to our negatively-shaped mind, we will just be pessimistic and twist the positive thing, trying to fit it into our negative mind, maybe by thinking that the happy thing won’t last, we do not deserve it. Happy things are transient, so are negative things. This won’t come to sense in a second. Our minds really need constant practices to stay positive.
