Famous or Popular

What is the difference between:

Famous and Popular?

I asked a few people and the consensus seems to be that Fame lasts and Popularity is transient. I think the difference is more subtle. Going to the beach has been popular for a century. Perhaps fame happens to others while popularity means I want to be connected to this.

I’d rather be famous than popular. But I’d take either.

He did, however, have the luxury of announcing his name and identity when it was advantageous to do so
