Pueblo Grande Museum is located at the SE corner of Washington St and 44th St in Phoenix. I had a class of young people at the artifact cart last Wednesday and one of them asked “Why did they put the ruin so near the airport?”I replied that I think the question should be: “Why did they put the airport so near this ancient ruin?”
When Northern Europeans first came to the Phoenix Valley in the second half of the nineteenth century the ancient mounds and canals were abandoned and there was no attempt to preserve any of it for at least a few decades. There are some early photos of the mound at the site of what is now the Museum. The name Phoenix has an interesting story and when I find it I’ll post it here.
