Scuba

Words Seldom Seen: Stifle

Stifle Verb: To prevent something from happening, being expressed, or continuing. Example one: “She barely stifled a yawn as he droned on.” Example two: “The parliament stifled dissent by jailing the opposition.” I joined a school of fish in Palau for a photo opportunity.

Words Seldom Seen: Elide

Elide Verb: To suppress or alter a sound, a word or other fact. Example one: “in the word “ain’t” we elide the r and the o sounds from are not.” Example two: “while singing the praise of government action the press elided the consequence of the new dependency.” The photo is again from Palau in 2015. A large friendly fish the name of which I have forgotten. In this description I elided the fact that the fish was begging to be fed.

Whale Sharks

Last week Howard R. and I went to Bahia de los Angeles for a diving adventure and we had one.  The drive down was amazing.  It has rained in the cactus forest and even the Boojem trees are green. The town isn’t much but the people are wonderful the Hotel is clean and the diving is excellent. Snorkel Hunter

A website that I have touted before is Bridge Hunter.  It is a user developed guide to the historic and interesting bridges in the United States.  Kind of a Wikipedia for bridges, it is very popular with engineers and others that like to see great engineering. Recently I was asked by someone for advise on where to snorkel in Hawaii and by someone else for advise on where to snorkel in Belize.  I did a search for a Bridge Hunter equivalent for snorkeling and didn’t… Read More »Snorkel Hunter

Backyard Scuba Reminder

One of the ideas that I promote is not just looking at things but actually seeing them.  I call it backyard scuba because it is what people are willing to do underwater but forget to do in the backyard unless reminded. The new small digital cameras allow us to see the wonders in our own back yards in details that even a few years ago weren’t possible.  For instance here is a picture of a climbing rose by our backdoor. Note the bee on the… Read More »Backyard Scuba Reminder

Codgers Fiji 2011-4

This year the elusive Red Sea Horse was found and photographed by Sean Burke.  Betsy King and Sylvia Burke share the honor as co-discoverers. The Red Sea Horse sighting in Fiji The ruse was perfectly created by Simon’s great planting of the horse, Gene B’s excited discovery and Solo the divemaster’s figuring out what was going on and playing along.  Codger Dive Trips are a time when we can all be in 8th grade again
