Stoned

We visited the “Levitated Mass” at the Los Angles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday.  It was heavy.  The LACMA website calls it a Megalith which in my mind makes this installation a henge.  The artist is Michael Heizer.  What I admire most, having moved some big stones around myself, is that he was able to convince art patrons to put up the money to move and install the stone.

Walking under the Levitated Mass gave me a control of nature feeling, as if I was taking a big risk, even though it is well designed and not in the least dangerous.

A bit of perspective:

  • This stone weighs about 330 tons.
  • One of the large stones at Stonehenge weighs about 25 tons
  • A medium sized office building, like the one in the background of these pictures weighs about 12,000 tons. Office building construction facts

The Levitating Mass can be seen as a driveby from 6th Street just East of Fairfax.  But this exhibit is best seen from below.  If you can find parking entry is free.  Parking is $10 in the LACMA lot.

We had lunch first with Gil and Nanci C. at Short Order at the Farmers Market.  A very nice outing.

What has that got to do with the Price of Eggs?

I saw this sign in the window of an antique store in Orange County.

However before you wax nostalgic for the good old days, 14 cents a dozen for eggs calls for a little perspective.  I’m guessing that the sign came from the 1930’s or 40’s when the minimum wage was about $0.50 an hour.  So a low wage worker would have had to work about 15 minutes to buy a dozen eggs.  Today a dozen eggs cost about $1.20 and the minimum wage is about $8.00.  So now-a-days the same low wage worker would have to work only about 10 minutes to buy a dozen eggs.

The sign is for sale for about $100.00

College Sports Thoughts

Graduates of UCLA often send their children to USC.

Where do the graduates of USC send their children?

This weekend UCLA plays Stanford in their last regular season game.  If they lose they may have to play Stanford again the following Friday in the PAC 12 conference final.

Note to Sports Conference organizers.  Don’t use a number in your name.  That way when the number of teams in the conference changes as it surely will you won’t need to rebrand.

How about just : The Pacific Athletic Conference

Or if you need a superlative:

The Big Pacific Conference

or

The Great Pacific Conference

No numbers.  Ask Rick Perry.

Happy Fourth of July

America: Where moms get a day and sharks get a week.

We are in Switzerland and so are missing the famous Sierra Madre 4th of July Parade.

What a great country we live in.

BTW July 4th is no longer my birthday.

get over it.

Plastic Bag Ban Update

The Environmental Agency of the United Kingdom studied bags and decided that plastic disposable bags were the most environmentally friendly.

But it is fashionable to ban them.  So we do.

Plastic Bags are a Good Thing

A well reasoned article

But the Nanny State doesn’t just react to facts.  It is fashion and feeling based.  Why don’t we go back to gourds for cups?  Ceramics are so man made and environmentally destructive.

My solution:

I went to the local Grocery wholesaler (Smart and Final) and bought a box of a thousand “tee shirt bags” just like the ones they used to give away at the market and I’m keeping them in my car.  I’ll supply my own bags when I shop and bring in a few to give to other shoppers.
