A Facebook Analogy

Facebook isn’t new.  It is a digital re-creation of the Spanish paseo, the urban stoop in the summer, Sunday morning church services or the small town front porch.  It allows you to see and be seen in a larger community.  It opens you up to all comers.  It allows you to transmit not just data but texture.  You can choose how you present yourself to the world or you can just watch the world go by.

I love Facebook.  I own some of their stock.  I post something almost every day.  Some would say I post too much.  On the other hand some of my friends won’t even open Facebook accounts and I understand.  My Father wouldn’t get television until 1962.  I disagreed then and I disagree now but I understand.  The world changes no matter what you think.  It adapts to new technology but the basic needs to communicate, entertain and signal stay the same.

So I say embrace the new technology.  Put up a new picture.  Go and sit on your metaphorical stoop.  Let people know you “like” something.

  1. I appreciate your contribution to the WWW. In trying to locate a common acquaintance, I found your blog. It inspired me to venture beyond the stoop and “comment” that I “like” your blog. It is wonderful to revisit your quirky stalwart nature; first met at Coventry. (BPk, CA, not England).
May your role as an approbator prove be a long and enjoyable one.

Thanks for your nice comment. Finding people I used to work with is one of the extra benefits of keeping a blog. What years did you work for Coventry? Where?
