The title says it all.

A few years ago the worrying class felt that we have to encourage “energy independence” by subsidizing corn production for ethanol.  So we used taxpayer money and tax incentives to build a new industry.  I argued then that subsidies were a bad idea.  Subsidies distort markets and almost always have bad longterm effects.  Think about rent control for example.

But there are a lot of Senators from farm states and we had to “do something” so we started to subsidize ethanol as a “renewable energy resource.”  Now we are a few years into the ethanol program and the price of grain around the world has risen by 40% and people are starving.  It is time to Stop Ethanol Subsidies Now. That the NY Times, who were a proponent of the subsidies idea originally, has changed its mind should not deter us.   Ethanol subsidies are killing people.
