In the last few weeks the Senate passed and the President vetoed a bill that would have restricted the type of interrogations that the CIA could do. It specifically prohibits water-boarding. How the candidates voted on this defining piece of legislation should tell us something about how they would govern.
John McCain voted against it. He explained that although he opposes torture he did not want to hamstring the CIA in an unpredictable future.
Hillary Clinton and Barak Obama both said they supported the legislation but were conveniently absent when the vote took place.
The two Democrat candidates were unwilling to vote on the record for or against this issue. It appears to me that they took the politically expedient way out. They were not willing to stand up and be counted. They wanted some wiggle room so that if fighting terrorism becomes a big issue during the general election they don’t have to defend what might become an unpopular position. Not exactly what I want from the President. You might disagree with McCain but at least he is willing to take a stand and defend it.
