One of the things that seems to happen a lot as people get older is that they don’t want to admit that it is happening. So they resist glasses, hearing aids, canes, walker and life alert. Apparently it is common and I don’t expect to be different so I’m going to get a cane now and start to use it occasionally. I already use poles when I go on long hikes. By starting to use the cane now I will mentally think of it as a another tool instead of as a symbol of age.
I’m planning to be old for a long time. The alternative is not that attractive. So getting some good habits for old age early is a good strategy. I’m also going to revive my idea of the Ipod style directional hearing aid and try one of those before I have to confront deafness. And I’m going to get the habit of calling a cab sometimes instead of driving everywhere. You’re only old once, make the most of it. Act your age.

Cane’s also make good defensive weapons.
Especially one with a weighted head.
