IBM Selectric

These two typewriters were donated to the PJTC Library and I’m supposed to figure out what to do with them.

Selectric 2
Selectric 1

I looked up typewriters on Ebay and found that Selectrics sell for about $50.00 plus $50.00 freight. They are heavy. They had very few plastic parts on them.

Typewriters on Craig’s List was another idea. You can buy 4 typewriters for $20.00. It is not clear if it is each or the lot.
Selectrics are supposed to be a collectible but there are probably many more in circulation than there are collectors at this time. I suppose the best thing to do is to stash them somewhere and wait about 75 years. The Model T was a junk car in 1945.

Any ideas? An answer gets you into the Blog Hall of Fame.

  1. Selectrics.

I recently shipped 5 manual typwriters out to West Africa. They have a power problem and electricity shortage so the electric typewriters and computers don’t work! The typewriters were old and cost an average of $8 each and cost a lot more to ship.
The next problem is ribbon. You might find the typwriter but it is really hard to find ribbon or cassettes. However, there is an enterprising guy in Accra who re-inks ribbon, he might be a one off, it is a messy job and is fine as long as you only want black.
