Postcard Dilemma

I recently purchased at a very good price about a thousand historic postcards. They date from the 1950’s to the early 1970’s and were bought by someone on their travels and never sent.

The dilemma is do I send them out to my “postcard pals” or keep them as a valuable collection?

Example two

I’m trying to get away from collecting any more stuff and my old collection of cards is one of the reasons that caused me to start sending postcards. However….

Example three

I think that a postcard that was sent thirty years later is of less value than one that was never sent but getting them out into the world where many more people can enjoy them has a certain attraction also.

This action has four potential results: (1) postmen believe they’ve found a long-lost postcard that was stuck on the side of a bin, etc, and you save a bunch of money on postage; (2) a certain percentage of your cards never get delivered due to insufficient postage; (3) same as (1), except your antics make the news for the same reason, or; (4) you are indicted for mail fraud under Title 18, United States Code, Section 1341. Postcards spice up peoples’ lives, gives them some unexpected contact, etc. But this is postcarding 2.0. Here you never know what’s going to happen!

Can’t access your comment postings, but wanted to say that I think you should share the postcards!

  3. Hi Simon,

As one of the lucky recipients of your post cards, I say send \’em! Andy, my brother-in-law, who\’s sitting next to me as I write this — and who is also a recipient of your post cards — agrees!

Your postcards are always a welcome sight. Thanks so much.

  4. Receiving your post cards has become the highlight of our first class mail experience and it proves you can make a great impact using very little paper. Would you let the bulk mail people know that please? We say send out the vintage postcards or build a new garage!
