The Problem: Your cooking, your hands are sticky and you need to throw something away. But you have to pull on the trash can door handle to do it. God knows what is already on the handle and after you touch the handle it will be worse.
The Solution: Install the same sensor that is in automatic sink faucets almost everywhere. When you wave your hand near the trash voila the door opens. Its safe its clean and its inexpensive. And best of all: all of the components already exist they just need to be assembled for this application.

On a side note, this post reminds me of a story:
When American astronauts went into space, they discovered their ball point pens didn’t work in zero gravity. We spent over a million dollars perfecting the space pen. Writes upside down, under water, everywhere: a testament to American enginuity.

The Russians encountered the same problem. Instead of inventing the space pen, they simply took some pencils next time.
What ever happened to the step trash can?
Andrew
It is an even better idea with the sensor near the foot. Excellent news
