Six Point Buck

Rebecca and I were hiking up the Mount Wilson Toll Road last Friday and we saw this deer near the upper slide.

We walked up the newly bulldozed road (Click here to Read that wonderful story) and we saw him peeking at us over the ridge:

Then finally as we looked down off the road we saw him again wandering off:

Clearly this is a deer who does not feel threatened by humans.

  1. Can’t post comment on UR Mt. Wilson toll road blog/page, because the spam protection prohibits it (no question like here).

Q: How does one find out when the toll road reopens? Contact a local forestry dept in charge of this area?

    TIA

Those are Vasque Breeze boots farther down the page—no waterproofing liner, not the Goretex model Breeze XCR?

Thanks for the heads up on the comments on the Toll road site.
Eaton Canyon Nature center is a good source for conservative current information about the trail status.
They are Vasque Breeze Boots. I always choose lighter weight over waterproof for California hiking.

  3. I called:

Person who answered just said “they” have not released an estimated time for opening the toll-road, still closed as of Sept 30th…in response to my follow “weeks, months?” Typical gov bureaucracy 🙂

I will try Eaton, but probably won’t get anything more helpful :(.

I recently bought the Breeze XCR. The Breeze w/o Gore-Tex, as sold @A-16, pale slate blue color, surprisingly has a *slightly* stiffer, almost true leather backpacker boot stiffness, more supportive/shock-absorbing shank than the XCR model.

I wanted breathable/max cool, but also water resistance for occasional sudden rains/left-over snow on Baldy. Tried even more breathable Montrail ‘Namache’ & GT lined ‘Hardcore’ lightweight ankle-high trailrunners. Both don’t have thick enough/shock absorbing soles/shank for my old, worn-out, weak joints and bones…going to learn to use trekking poles.

Doesn’t look like they’ll open MW Toll-road until rains put out the last smoldering embers :(, wanted the practice, b4 attempting Baldy next month.
