The photo is of a detail on one of the murals in downtown Phoenix. The detail is beautiful and creates a finished mural that is larger than life. I might have enough mural photo to create a category.
The quote is a little bit obtuse but some illustrations will make Goddard’s intent clear:

The May Pole
None of these is necessary and yet they are done ritualistically, annually and with great ceremony.
