Words Seldom Seen: Nutpick

Nutpick

Verb: To use the most extreme person or position as an example of the other side of the argument. Refers to cherry-picking the worst or nuttiest comments to disparage a larger group.

Example one: It is nutpicking to use “Go back to Poland.” as the opinion of all pro-Palistinian demonstrators because a few of them were yelling it at a rally.

Example two: It is nutpicking to use Marjorie Taylor Greene as a representative example of all conservatives.

Nutpicking is a new word that is a portmanteau of Nut (as in crazy) and Picking (as in choosing). It has been used and disparaged by, among others, Nate Silver and Jonah Goldberg.
