Words Seldom Seen: Greenwashing

Greenwashing

Noun: Greenwashing is an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing that products are environmentally friendly or have a greater positive environmental impact than what is true.

Example 1: An airline claiming it is carbon neutral because it buys carbon credits from existing forests is guilty of greenwashing.

Example 2: Tesla owners are greenwashing if they believe their cars, charged with electricity from fossil fuel powered plants, are good for the environment.

Photo is of a postcard of a gasoline powered Mustang. Not my dream car.
