It is the season when platitudes substitute for policy. I’ve written about it before but it bears repeating: someone is speaking in platitudes if you can’t imagine a normal human adult believing the opposite. Platitudes are general and often not actionable.
- “Make America Great Again” is a platitude.
- “Vote for Joe” is not a platitude.
- “Black Lives Matter” is a platitude.
- “Stop mass incarceration of minorities” is not a platitude.
- “Build the Wall” is an open question.
