Processed food is one of the inventions mentioned in the book Fifty Inventions That Shaped the Modern Economy by Tim Harford. He focuses on the Swanson TV dinner but points out that among the first processed foods was a plucked and dressed chicken. The time saving from using processed foods had huge implications in the work force and the home. The book is excellent.
But there is a downside to processed food and a plastic wrapped “cheese flight” illustrates it very well.

Unfortunately we have become a society dependent on plastic and its is having a substantial negative effect on us. Mostly single use plastic, like water bottles, grocery bags and wrappings like you mentioned here take a toll. Most (maybe all) of the plastic wrap like what you mention and plastic bags are virtually not recyclable and end up in our landfills (when we are lucky) much of it also ends up in our rivers and consequently our oceans
