Beyond the Hundredth Meridian
by Wallace Stegner
This is one of the best books I’ve read in years. Stegner is a great writer of fiction and the story he tells about Powell seems at times to be fiction. Powell did a lot more than to be the first man down the Grand Canyon. He became and expert on Native Americans, started the USGS and worked tirelessly for a workable development plan for the arid western US. The book was written in the 1970’s but it is still relevant. Highly recommended.A Ten on my one to ten scale
