We were in Charlston SC for a few days after Christmas to attend the wedding of Chip Lindsey and Kate Smith. Chips mother, Karen has been a walking friend of Nurit’s for many years. I won’t attempt a travelogue of Charleston many have done that better than I can including the visitors bureau. We went to visit the Angel Oak. I liked it so much I made a post about it.
Angel Oak
We drove across the Ravenel Bridge a few times and got some very nice picture even though it was cloudy.
the longest cable stay bridge in the western hemisphere
and we walked around the shopping and the historic districts.
Historic buildings
Some of the architecture reminded me of the Caribbean especially the colors of the buildings. The wedding itself took place in the Hibernian Hall.
Hibernians were/are an Irish fraternal organization who based on this building used to have a lot of money.
Kates family were a very gracious, inclusive and accomplished group. They really went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The party favors (gift to attendees) were small sea grass basket with some local fruits and nuts inside. I had the bad sense to eat one of the kumquats. There is a reason they didn’t become a popular fruit.
Sea grass baskets from the low country are one of the last of the true American hand crafts. I predict that a hundred years from now they will be as cherished and valuable as 19th century Native American baskets are today. A beautiful gift.
