Invasive Species

In April I went diving in Roatan, Honduras with the Codger Divers. We had a great trip with excellent camaraderie and very good diving. CoCo View was the first place the Codgers dove back in 2003. As far as I can tell the reef is still as healthy sixteen years later but there are less fish. The big changes are not climate change. They are Lion Fish, an invasive species from South Asia that eats all the reef fish and has no natural predators, and Cruise Ships, an invasive species from the First World that homogenizes the culture and destroys the ecosystem. They are trying to eradicate the Lion Fish but they will fail until a predator is found or evolves to keep it in check.

They are not trying to eradicate the Cruise Ships because they are extremely addictive. In exchange for the erosion of all your differences the Ships give you jobs and money. In 2003 there were 15 t0 20 thousand people living on the small island of Roatan. Now the population is 150,000. Mostly to support the Cruise Ship bonanza. It is not sustainable.

In my opinion Cruise Ships are much more dangerous than Lion Fish.
