Only one of my friends has made an argument that it was okay to dismiss the charges against Mr Smollett. He argues that there is precedent for dismissing minor felonies and that this crime was to a large extent victimless and that Smollett did forfeit his bond ($10,000). I took umbrage.(note to self: Umbrage is a Word Seldom Seen)
I’d say there were myriad victims. Primarily the MAGA hat wearers who Smollett accused of beating him up. But also future victims of real hate crimes who will have a harder time being taken seriously. And what about all of the blacks and minorities who don’t have his connections? They just have to suffer the indignity of having this clown appear to be their representative.
The other argument that there is precedent for dismissing has some weight. Putting aside that two wrongs don’t make a right the timing makes this argument smell. Even a President can’t pardon a person before he has been convicted. It sure smells wrong to allow Smollett to walk away from his hoax without even having to admit he made a mistake.
And finally there is the politics of the whole sordid affair. A man accuses a class of attacking him and then because he is a member of a particular well connected class he walks away. This will be an issue that won’t die in 2020. Sorry Democrats.
