A Political Heuristic

I went over the November ballot with some friends and applied my new heuristic to some of the measures and candidates and it gave good insight. The heuristic I’m working with is that moving the world towards prosperity is the critical issue. Here are some examples:Prop 127 on the Arizona ballot sets up a number of new schemes to direct money toward renewable energy resources. This does not move the state toward more prosperity because it will increase energy costs for poor people.

Prop 126 if passed would prohibit the legislature from taxing service that are not already taxed. It fails the prosperity test. Poor people would in the margin pay more in future taxes if services which are consumed more by the rich than the poor were never taxed.

McSally vs Sinema. I’m not fond of either one but based on their records McSally is more likely to vote for measures that grow the economy than Sinema who is more concerned about fairness than growth. So I lean toward McSally even though I’m repulsed by her anti immigrant stand.
