{"id":4587,"date":"2011-06-27T08:09:48","date_gmt":"2011-06-27T15:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/?p=4587"},"modified":"2011-06-27T08:09:48","modified_gmt":"2011-06-27T15:09:48","slug":"touching-the-civil-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simonburrow.com\/?p=4587","title":{"rendered":"Touching the Civil War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday my nonfiction book club met to discuss <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peoples-History-Civil-War-Struggles\/dp\/1595581251\/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1309186364&amp;sr=1-3\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>A People&#8217;s History of the Civil War<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by David Williams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"IMG_2259\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5876776423\/img_2259.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5061\/5876776423_a67091315e_m.jpg?resize=180%2C240\" alt=\"IMG_2259\" width=\"180\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We had a very good discussion of the causes of the Civil War, whether there is ever a just war and the fallacy of reasoning from a particular premise to a universal conclusion.\u00a0 But the very best part was when Larry G showed us some original documents he had from the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"IMG_2232\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5874794063\/img_2232.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3116\/5874794063_dd54b6db92_m.jpg?resize=187%2C240\" alt=\"IMG_2232\" width=\"187\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The documents included the discharge of Private Charles R Ayres and I took a photo of it.\u00a0 He was a clerk from Boston who served a 100 day enlistment.\u00a0 Ayres was Larry&#8217;s Great Great Grandfather.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Medium\" title=\"IMG_2232_2\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5875354850\/img_2232_2.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3279\/5875354850_d361f0240f.jpg?resize=500%2C190\" alt=\"IMG_2232_2\" width=\"500\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8220;No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">There were also some reminisces that Charles had written later in his life about his experiences in the war.\u00a0 Touching history.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday my nonfiction book club met to discuss A People&#8217;s History of the Civil War by David Williams.
