{"id":4100,"date":"2011-02-18T08:58:12","date_gmt":"2011-02-18T16:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/?p=4100"},"modified":"2011-02-18T08:58:12","modified_gmt":"2011-02-18T16:58:12","slug":"high-speed-roads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simonburrow.com\/?p=4100","title":{"rendered":"High Speed Roads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High speed rail is one of the ideas that President Obama is pushing along with solar roof tiles as a replacement for hope and change.\u00a0 But high speed rail makes no economic sense for most of America or to most Americans.\u00a0 The densities are to low, the costs both fixed and variable are to high and they don&#8217;t solve the problem of still needing a car when you get to wherever you are going.\u00a0 We love cars and the freedom they provide us.\u00a0 So why don&#8217;t we build <strong>high speed, high efficiency roads<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"P6230009\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5455871185\/p6230009.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5172\/5455871185_b4e0db0243_m.jpg?resize=240%2C180\" alt=\"P6230009\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The constituency for High Speed Rail has been an alliance of construction companies and construction trade unions coupled with environmentalists.\u00a0 High Speed Roads is an idea that can be sold to Americans and will still benefit the construction lobby.\u00a0 They will be expensive to build, will give us new and better technology than the rest of the world and people will spend real money to use them.\u00a0 A high speed road from LA to Las Vegas would make it possible to drive to Vegas in two and a half hours instead of four hours.\u00a0 Want to be an environmentalist take the high speed low emissions bus.<\/p>\n<p>What about safety?\u00a0 Sensors in the cars, approved car models and strictly enforced minimum speeds could make them safe.\u00a0 The Autobahn in Germany is quite safe.
