{"id":3973,"date":"2011-01-16T10:38:05","date_gmt":"2011-01-16T18:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/?p=3973"},"modified":"2011-01-16T10:38:05","modified_gmt":"2011-01-16T18:38:05","slug":"herb-the-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/simonburrow.com\/?p=3973","title":{"rendered":"Herb the Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new bridge across the Colorado River at Hoover Dam is beautiful.\u00a0 It is an engineering marvel and demands many superlatives, but to me it is a big disappointment.\u00a0 Unfortunately it was built so that for people crossing it there is no indication that they have just crossed one of the engineering marvels of the world.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"IMG_0518\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5360284973\/img_0518.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5121\/5360284973_8361205fed_m.jpg?resize=240%2C180\" alt=\"IMG_0518\" width=\"240\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Bridge from the Highway<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The bridge is not visible from the approaches and the guard rails are so high you can&#8217;t see anything from a passenger car.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible to appreciate the magnitude of the bridge but you have to take the old road and pay to park at the dam.\u00a0 It is like building the Golden Gate Bridge and covering it with a tarp.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a class=\"tt-flickr tt-flickr-Small\" title=\"IMG_0534\" href=\"http:\/\/simonburrow.com\/\/photos\/photo\/5360288761\/img_0534.html\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5243\/5360288761_1df0a4a820_m.jpg?resize=240%2C149\" alt=\"IMG_0534\" width=\"240\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>From the middle of the dam<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The people who designed and funded the bridge couldn&#8217;t even decide on a name so it is the Mike O&#8217;Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge.\u00a0 Doesn&#8217;t it just roll off\u00a0 your tongue.\u00a0 We are going to call it &#8220;Herb the Bridge&#8221;
